Forty-five minutes is the classic length of a class period and a good size for deep work or a practice exam. Press Start and use the time calmly: the alarm sounds when it is over.

Why 45 minutes is such a common length

In many schools a class period lasts between 45 and 50 minutes. That length balances students' attention span against the need to change classrooms or teachers. For adults it also works: it is long enough to get into a complicated subject and short enough not to exhaust your attention. Performance drops when we go too long without a break, so pairing 45 minutes of focus with 10 to 15 minutes of rest is a sustainable rhythm.

Deep work in 45 minutes

Deep work needs time to warm up: in the first 5 to 10 minutes the mind is still settling in. Forty-five minutes leaves room to get through that phase and still produce consistently. A few steps that help:

  1. Decide on a single outcome in advance, such as "write section 2" or "review the payments module".
  2. Silence notifications and close tabs you don't need.
  3. Keep water and materials within reach so you don't stand up mid-block.
  4. When you finish, jot one line on where you stopped so you can resume effortlessly.

Practice exams and tests

Training under time pressure is one of the best preparation strategies. If your exam lasts 45 minutes, or you want to simulate a third of a longer test, start the timer, solve without consulting anything and check only afterward. Divide the time per question: for 30 questions in 45 minutes, each gets about 1.5 minutes. Flag the hard ones to return to at the end and keep the last 5 minutes for reviewing your answers.

For teachers

Split a lesson into three blocks of about 15 minutes: explanation, worked example and student practice. Changing activity every quarter hour helps keep the class engaged. With the timer visible, students also learn to manage their own time during activities.

The break after the alarm

When the alarm sounds, resist the urge for "just a little more" and take a real break. Stand up, drink water, look out of the window and, if you can, walk for a few minutes. Then use the 15-minute timer to control the break and return to the task without losing your place.
