Who trades and when
The London Stock Exchange is the main exchange of the United Kingdom and one of the most international in the world, with stocks such as Shell, HSBC and AstraZeneca and the FTSE 100 index. London uses GMT in winter and BST (UTC+1) in summer, so Brasília time falls several hours behind it.
The LSE trading day (SETS system) starts with pre-trading from 7:00 and the opening auction (7:50–8:00), in London time. Continuous trading runs until 16:30, followed by the closing auction (16:30–16:35) and a post-close phase. On the eve of some holidays the LSE closes early, which this page does not take into account.
London is the bridge between Asia and New York: the end of the Tokyo session almost meets the London open, and London's afternoon overlaps New York's morning, when a large share of currency trading volume is concentrated.
